Join CARD’s Grand Opening at Chapman Park on January 12th
January 8, 2024
The Chico Area Recreation & Park District (CARD) invites you to join us for the grand opening celebration of the newly renovated Chapman Park on Friday, January 12th at 2:00 PM. Chapman Park is located at 775 E 16th Street in Chico next to the Dorothy F. Johnson Center.
Thanks to a $2.9 million grant awarded through the State Parks Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program, the Chapman Neighborhood Park has undergone a transformative makeover with an array of exciting new features, including a state-of-the-art splash park water feature, a revamped gardening and teaching area, a resurfaced multi-sport court, a covered picnic structure, a new walking path, exercise stations, and upgraded restroom facilities.
The $2.9 million grant, part of the competitive State Parks program, selected Chapman Park as one of 62 projects across California for the renovation and expansion of existing park spaces. This initiative aims to foster new parks and recreational opportunities, particularly in underserved communities.
In addition to the grant, generous community partners contributed to the elevated park design and amenities:
- The City of Chico contributed $500,000 to the project to ensure all the community’s preferred amenities could be included in the renovation.
- Melton Design Group provided time and materials for the Reflexology Path.
- Zamora Sod donated a portion of the sod for the playing field.
- Rain Forest Art secured a donation for beautiful mosaics which will be located on the bathroom facility.
- Sunrise Rotary donated funds to source the Bear and Salmon features for the splashpad.
In addition, community gardening classes in collaboration with UC Master Gardeners of Butte County will be offered in the spring.
The new splashpad feature will be open annually from May through October and courts will be open year-round during park hours.
We hope to see you on Friday, January 12th at 2:00 PM for the celebration! For more CARD updates, visit ChicoRec.gov and follow CARD on Facebook and @ChicoRec on Instagram.
